Abhinav Bindra: India's Goldfinger

BEIJING: The final shot from Abhinav Bindra's rifle may not have been heard outside the packed hall in the Beijing Shooting Range Complex on Monday morning. But its bang was loud enough to lift the spirit of a billion-plus Indians back home.

No individual gold has mattered so much to so many people in the history of Olympics. It was a medal for Abhinav; it was redemption for India. Never again will anyone be able to point a smug, sardonic finger and say: "No Indian is good enough to win an individual Olympic gold."

Hockey's eight gold medals notwithstanding, the last coming 28 years ago, this is the first time that an Indian has won an individual gold since modern Olympics started in 1896. There is no greater joy than listening to the sound of the national anthem on the world's biggest stage.

The global media looked bemused as grown-up Indians danced like little children, shedding tears of joy. How can they understand?

The joy was also spurred by the improbable nature of the triumph. The script of the men's 10m air rifle final might have been penned by Alfred Hitchcock himself. Bindra, who qualified for the final in the morning with the fourth-best score of 596, looked calm and assured when the call for the first shot came.

The first shot - 10.7. He started with a bang and that set the tone for the 10-shot final. He followed it up with a 10.3. After the third shot, a 10.4, he had moved from No. 3 to No. 2. Then, Bindra slowly ate into the lead of Finland's Henri Hakkinen and went ahead after the seventh shot with 10.6.

Hakkinen caught up with him after the ninth shot, and with one shot to go, the Indian and the Finn were tied at 689.7 points.

There was a hushed silence inside the hall. The suspense was unbearable. It's in such situations that champions show their mettle. And Bindra showed nerves of steel. He fired first, an amazing 10.8 for a total of 700.5. Home favourite and defending champion Zhu Qinan shot a 10.5 and Hakkinen simply withered under pressure, managing only 9.7. Bindra finally smiled, but barely.

He turned back and went up to hug his Swiss coach Gaby Buehlmann, with whom he trained for months in Germany, away from the intrusive home media. After the medals' ceremony, Bindra was mobbed by journalists, several of them from Finland and China.

"How does it feel Mr Bindra?" "Hard to describe it... it's the thrill of my life," he said, still looking calm as a monk. "The final shot was perfect. I just went for it. I was aggressive. It went my way. I'm lucky," he added in a matter-of-fact tone.

Will this not change his life? "My life will go on. I hope it changes the face of Olympic sports in the country," he said.

This is the fifth individual Olympic medal for India. Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav won the first, a bronze in wrestling at the Helsinki Games in 1952. After a long gap, Leander Paes won the tennis bronze in Atlanta Games in 1996. Then, Karnam Malleswari won a weightlifting bronze in 2000 in Sydney and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore raised the bar, winning a silver in Athens in 2004.

Rathore, who was practising for his event that is scheduled for Tuesday, watched it on TV in the players' lounge in the trap section. "My congratulations to Abhinav. He has raised the bar further. I always maintained that this is a world-class shooting team. There will be some hits and some misses."

My son has proved Singh is King: Bindra senior

With their son winning the first gold for India in the Olympics Monday, Babli and AS Bindra could not hide their joy, receiving congratulations from friends and relatives at their farm house near Chandigarh.

"My son has proved that 'Singh is King' in a real sense. He has brought laurels for the whole Sikh community and for the whole nation," said father AS Bindra.

The shooter's beaming mother Babli Bindra added: "I had talked to him briefly yesterday (Sunday) afternoon. He was determined to hit the bulls' eye this time. But still I was very nervous in the morning and was keeping my fingers crossed. Now I am trying his number but he must be busy as he is not picking the phone.

"We have not eaten anything except ladoos since morning as we did not get time to have our breakfast. Ever since the news broke that Abhinav won the first Olympics gold medal for India, all the phones at home have been ringing continuously.

"I had sent him an SMS in the morning, 'Abhinav you can do it, go for it', but I am sure he must have not seen it. On hearing the results, I was breathless and started screaming in joy," a beaming Babli told IANS.

"He will return to India Aug 14 and we are going to receive him at the airport. I am anxiously waiting for that moment when I can hug him and congratulate him," Babli added.

Like Abhinav's last two Olympic outings, the Bindra family also planned to go to Beijing to see his performance, but they decided against it as they could not find rooms in any good hotel there.

"It has proved to be a blessing in disguise that we did not go there. I have also not talked to him for the last five days. Our presence at the venue could have put an unnecessary pressure on him and affect his performance," said his father A.S. Bindra.

"Now I am just waiting for his return and then there will be a series of parties, celebrations, bursting of crackers and everything that I can do on this earth," he said.

The Bindra farmhouse, on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway near Zirakpur town in Punjab around 15 km from Chandigarh, wore a festive look with relatives and family friends pouring in to celebrate the occasion.

Despite the heavy rain, everyone in the farmhouse was busy congratulating one another and in dancing to the tunes of popular numbers.

Sweets, especially ladoos, were being distributed to everyone coming to the house.

He might be a 'Sikh' but definately not a 'Singh'

If his family proclaims to a be a 'Sikh' family then who are we or anyone for that matter to dispute that...let's atleast give them the credit for publicly acclaiming that their son belongs to a 'Sikh' family for otherwise ( going just by his name and looks) we d' have never known....lol. Apparently the family also did an Akhand Path at the Sector-8 Gurdwara Sahib in Chandigarh to pray for his success prior to his achieving this feat and also went to pay obeissance at Sri Harmandir Sahib after his success and their prayers had been answered. Personally, i believe that anyone who bows in front of and believes only and only in Sri Guru Granth Sahib is a 'Sikh'. On the other hand he in no way should be referred to as a 'Singh' by anyone (including his parents) since that definately would tatamount to distortion and misrepresentation of the meaning of that title and our identitites. That title is and should be reserved for male Sikhs only with 'Sabat Soorat' as bestowed upon us by Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj. Anyways i myself am personally glad for his achievement since he belongs to Chandigarh (my former hometown) - and has hence brought accolades to the city, and went to the same school as i attended - 'St Stephens' albeit he was much junior to me. Cheers

abhinav bindra

quite a few are upset as abhinav is not sabatsurat.but most important for a sikh is conduct, achar,.only a beard and turban cannot make you a sikh.if we donot live in accordance with guru's philosophy, rest will be meaningless.rehat is not mere bana.guru gobind singh's mama ,ram kuer did not become a khalsa.was he any less a sikh.?

Indias Goldfinger

Congrats to ABHINAV. From Guru Nanakdevjis time onwards to Sri Guru Granth Sahibjis, all the followers of Sikh Faith (Guru Granth Sahib) whether they were/are Hindus or Muslims are Sikhs of Guru.Simply by taking birth in a Sikh family one does not become Sikh unless one follows preachings of Sikh Gurus in their deeds. When one wears 'BANA' of Guru and loves "bani"of Guru then only one can call himself a Sikh otherwise such persons as loving "Bani"and not wearing "Bana" may call themselves as Sehajdhari Sikhs, and when a sikh becomes "Amritdhari"and lives as per "Rehat Maryada"one qualifies to be called"Khalsa" ie;Pure.

reply tp drdln

well it was better before that world did not know that he belonged to a Sikh family. He was never a sikh right from his birth that you have already confirmed. It would have been better if world also did not know that his ancestors came form Sikh family bcos now we are further ashamed that the world knows that this family whose ancestors were from sikh community no more respect the sikh traditions and without even beliving there faith they still manage to reach some pinnacle. Also just for your knowledge neither his father nor he use "SINGH" after there first name. What ever we are, I think we guys our better without such guys like Abhinav becos they bring more harm to our community than laurels. Please keep in mind I dont for a signle moment doubt his great acheivement but perhaps we can say like one other gentlemen commented that "An Indian has won a gold medal".This Indian belongs to which community, that we are unsure.

Congratulations Mr. Abhinav

Congratulations! You have done it. I think you may be more sikh than many who had uttered a very filthy language from their psyche, which doesn't behove to a true sikh. From outside you may be a saabat sikh if ur language is dirty you are nowhere near sikhi. mithhat neevi naanka gunh changiyayian tatt. and more so Jehbaan mania mant. A true sikh shouldn't see anybody else as doosra. He should see everybody in His roop. every body can't understand it unless we remove the spectacle of superiority and other vices.

Arguments over Abhinav as a Sikh

Below is [quoted] what one of Abhinav Bindra's relative posted on GLZ sikh group. SGPC has recognized him as a sikh irregardless of how much he cares to be called a sikh (see at the end). Does it make any sense for these puristists to spit venom and hatred against Abhinav and a majority of so called non-turbaned/mona/clean-shaved/non-pahul-dhari/ even patit due to ignorance about the term? <"I would like to correct those who refer to Abhinav as a 'patit'. I know a bit about the family because Abhinav happens to be my mother's second cousin. As per The Sikh Gurudwaras Act, "Patit" means a person who being a keshadhari Sikh trims or shaves his beard or keshas or who after taking amrit commits any one or more of the kurahits. [ http://punjablaws.gov.pk/laws/33.html ] . Abhinav was never a Keshdhari (I have seen him since his was born)... Infact, it was A.S.Bindra [his father] who was originally a Keshdhari but shaved off when he went abroad for his studies. The family does follow Sikh rites/ rituals and infact they had even organized Shabad-Kirtan in the Sector 8 Gurudwara, Chandigarh on Sunday to pray for Abhinav's success in the Olympics.... Abhinav's sister herself was married into a Hindu family (Kapurs of Atlas cycles) as per Hindu rites. Before Abhinav won the medal most people did not even know that he was a 'Sikh' as "Abhinav" is not a common Sikh name and he has never used Singh in his name. It is only after A.S.Bindra's comments about "Singh is King" and Sikhs eagerness to appropriate a part of Abhinav's success that this discussion started. As much I know him, it does not matter to him if we regard him as a Sikh or not. So it is better we expend our energies on other productive discussions.">

Sikh Nassal

Bhindra's family has been Sikh for many Generations, it is possible one of his great great grandfathers fought alongside the khalsa army with Guru Gobind Singh, Maharaja Ranjit Singh or Baba Deep Singh. As with other Sikhs his family no doubt consists of many great sacrifices to the religion, land and language. His blood runs deep in Sikhi. Whether many usurpers choose to believe it or not there is a Sikh race. Many non punjabi's may not know, but with a superficial glance punjabi's can tell who is Hindu, sikh, or muslim with a simple glance, looking at all clean shaven boys. Unfortunately the world is changing and we have accepted many bhaiya and Goray into our Ancestral dharma. Sikhy is not only a bloodline but a birthright and to Bhindra I say Bole So Nihal with thousands upon thousands of Punjabi clean shaven sikhs behind me. I do not mind people becoming Sikh, but do not Forget the sacrifices my Great grandfather made so I could retain my Language, land and religion. And you know, if I can tell who is sikh just by looking at someone whether he is clean shaven or not, so should you. Sikh ik vakhree kom nee ik vakhree nassal hai-Bhindranwale Tomorrow when the time comes to fight for Punjab and Sikhi, I assure you there will be many punjabi men with short hair cuts and moustaches fighting alongside amritdharis.

Don’t hurt Sikh Sentiments by promoting his as “ SINGH IS KI

I am extremely shocked and disappointed the way... most respectful SIKH community website is exploiting and distracting Sikh youths by promoting "Abhinav Bindra" as SIKH when his entire family has disrespected SIKHISM by not wearing turban. At one end you are opening boycotting film like "SINGH IS KING". When we all know that non of the actors in this movie are Sikh yet they have did what I could expect best from non-Sikh to promote and give lost pride to our religion.... Their are millions of Sikh across the globe... If none of us had ever shown courage in making a 3 hour movie with only Sikh heroes and actors.... then on which ground are we opposing this movie.... Or is it like... we have lost he hope and confidence in ourselves that on big screen we shall ever see any TURBAN HERO playing a +ve lead role in a movie.. and entire world watching it........ Its my humble request to all that..... Only true Sikh should be acknowledged and given credit of representing our religion instead of those who have already betrayed our religion by doing shave and removing turban. If we ourselves are not confident about our identity, how would we expect our children’s to believe in Sikhism in its true colour.

Are We NOT HYPOCRATES

I am extremely shocked and disappointed the way... most respectful SIKH community website is exploiting and distracting Sikh youths by promoting "Abhinav Bindra" as SIKH when his entire family has disrespected SIKHISM by not wearing turban and shaving their beared. If you wanted to appricate his performance, We should call him an OUTSTANDING INDIAN PLAYER... but surely not a SINGH !!>>>> At one end you are opening boycotting film like "SINGH IS KING". To Sahajdhari

Its unfortunate that you think if he does not wear a turban still he is a Sikh.I hope not many people start thinking like you.Imagine if he was wearing a turban and in his full sikhi roop what role model he could be for the young up coming generation. But i am sure he would not have got these values becos like father like son!!!

wat a joke

india won one gold medal and making a big fuss about it.....out of one billion people they cant even produce few good atheletes who can compete in the olpmpics......its all about politics and money making since all their money is after cricket they dont promote no sports......before india had a good hockey team and they used to win cups and most of them were sikhs but now nobody cares about them so they dont play good....everybody is after cricket...now all the diff states and the central govt. is announcing to give him this much money tat much money.....but they dont spend a penny before on the players and get them good coaches and a good training....poor guy had to wait for half hr for his car to go back to his hotel after winning the medal but all the indian olpmpic officals were there to get their pics taken infron of the media then jus left him alone so they wouldnt hav to give him their car.........wat a joke

congrates!!

what about the few sabat soorat sikhs, who do all the dirty things in the disguise of a sikh, why you ppz get numb when there is debate abt them, why dont we appriciate abhinavs humbleness of being calld a sikh aftre wining the title, taking a gold in olympic is not that easy, hes has made whole INDIANS proud not just the sikhs, and if he says himself hes a sikh, its a big salp on all hindus faces in a way, lets not forget the hindus may still be jealous when he calls himself sikhs, its very great acheivement by him.may god belss you abhinav

what a beautiful sikh

a sikh is made not by an outer image but by the internal qualities of a king....Abinhav is a son of the Guru just like any other son. The majority of Sikhs are Sehajdhari not Amritdhari. www.ProjectNaad.com

how can u become a sikh from

how can u become a sikh from inside when u havnt even put on a sikh uniform ??? it works from outside to inside not the other way around my friend

projectnaad behind all ur

projectnaad behind all ur comments there seem to be sum sort of hidden agenda....most of ur recent comments hav been anti-sikh yet u claim to be a non-profit organization promoting sikhi....there was an article about u and ur hwole website at panthicweekly lately some interesting facts about u and ur thinking.......

Yaa..... Saabat surat - CLEAN SHAVEN

Harman's picture
What a beautiful saabat surat Clean shaven sikh...... LOL...... Projectnaad ji.... Are those people fools who take so much care for those religious symbols blessed to us ?? Are these symbols useless and aren't they required ?? The only visible difference between a Manmukh and a Gurmukh is the religious symbols. Doesn't matter how many debates you do about it.... you're not a true Sikh without 5 K's. Clean shavens don't have right to call themselves gursikhs. "Where there's a will there's a way" and if u have a strong will to keep the symbols intact, guru will always be there to support you. Sahejdharis only increse our numbers but sometimes become a burden on us.... Quality is more important than quantity.

sikh

No dear brother someone is not a fool who keeps the outer form of Guru Gobind Singh....the khalsa saroop given by the 10th master is a very special form....Dasmesh Pitta Guru Gobind Singh says that those who take the Amrit and follow the rehat are Guaranteed results....we dont disagree on the royal radiance created by the uniform given by Guru Gobind Singh but the difference between you and me is that I can appreciate the key qualities that make a sikh a sikh ... one of those includes being soft hearted and embracing the world as our family....another includes being humble and considering everyone as being better and purer than ourselves....the correct definition of a sikh is in Bhai Gurdas Vaars (the key to sikh philosophy)....the current rehat maryada gives in my opinion a much more sectionist and "religious" view of a sikh versus the spiritualist definition given by Bhai Gurdas Ji.... As always the debate once again boils down to what is a sikh....and as always people start sectioning of our community klike they seem to own it. www.ProjectNaad.com

I have a gut feeling!

jdeeps23's picture
Please excuse me for this but sat sangat ji this projectnaad guy to me seems like another Hindu in disquise. I've had some debate with mr. projectnaad ji and I felt that this guy is lost and he's trying to convience people. One of his beliefs are that it is totally okay for a Khalsa to go to a Hindu mandar and bow before shiva's statue or any other. Dont believe a word he says. Most likely he will reply to this messege by giving his own interpretation of Sikhi and not what Guru Gobind Singh ji has ordered. Mr. projectnaad ji stop wasting the sangat's time because in the eyes of my Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj, there is NO PROJECTNAAD, NO 3HO, NO AKJ, NO SGPC, NO NANAKSAR AND THE REST OF THE NONSENSE GROUPS THAT WE HAVE CREATED THAT HAS DESTROYED OUR PANTH, THERE IS ONLY kHALSA, THAT'S IT. SO GET LOST AND DON'T BRING YOUR BULL HERE. - WJKK, WJKF

jdeeps23

As usaula you are running your mouth again. Calling people hindu etc etc. You are no better then the RSS and BJP because you a destorying the sikh community. Why is thier only Khalsa, are you saying that Khalsa is greater then sikhism because that is all you talk about. When was it you last help a person who was not a Amrit sikh. When did you do seva outside of a temple? I guess never because the essence of sikhism and khalsa is to help and serve those who need help. Thousands of people in India are starving and have medical problem, are you helping them or just spreading your hate and misguidance. It should not matter if someone is a muslim, hindu, christian or even a jew by our teaching we have been taught to help them. Going on about hindus do you forget those who helped sikhs after the 1984 riots, those who joined forces that would gop after the politicians who pushed gave speeches to kill sikhs. Look at all the ones that help create safe heavens for sikhs and help in care with no help of the govt, also the ones that hid sikhs during the riots and even the one who bought children up after thier parents were killed. Habe you read the stories of Sikhs who were in the riots, I guess not. If you feel so much hatred against sikhs who are not amrit then I recon you should read the donations book of all temples including Harminder Sahib and see how many sikhs who are not Amrit have donated to temples. Do you give 10% of your earning to your temple? In regards to the destroyed panth, you yourself have destoryed the panth by judging other, this is Gods job not yours so let him have the last choice. I am so glad that there are only a small group of people like you and hopefully over time there will be less and we can start uniting sikhs. The sangat is the all sikhs not justy you jdeeps23 so you stop wasting the sangats time, also please stop doing all the ganster poses and looking like pac and stuff cos you are nothing. How about what Guru Nanak Ji sainf or Guru Teg Ji are they now nothing an thier teachings are dust. Read tge SGGS with a clean heart and not trying to find things that are on your side. You sound like a muslim cleric telling his followers to kill all infidels. I know you will have a go at me but remember I dont give a Dam, cos the only person I answer to is God not you. 23yrs I think that is your age so grow up, thier are people who have lived longer then you and wiser then you on these boards. Can I ask why use WJKK and WJKF isnt this simplyfing sikhism, why not put the whole line or is it that you can only right a full word when you are spiting hatred. UNITY IS THE KEY TO THE SURVIVAL OF SIKHS, IF YOU THINK THE RSS IS DOING A GOOD JOB IN DESTROYING SIKHISM WELL GUES WHAT YOU ARE DOING MUCH BETTER JOB IN DESTORYING SIKHISM.

Defected Sehajdhaaris have Superiority Complex

Harman's picture
I think Superiority complex is the major problem with Sehajdhaaris.... Even a person like you who claims to be a preacher is reflecting the same problem. "we dont disagree on the royal radiance created by the uniform given by Guru Gobind Singh" And this shows you guys think it's all superficial. This is the 21st century dude and, by default, every 1'z aware of the fact that "Attitude changes life"... and you cannot control or bind some 1 else's will or attitude. Even if you go to the remotest village of Punjab or any part of India you won't find people, kids or even grown ups who keep their kesh or other religious symbols without their will. Doesn't matter they belong to a Sikh family or not. U'll find many clean shaven kids of Amritdhaari parents and also the other way round.... You'll find Amritdhaari kids of patit or clean-shaven parents...... Don't live in the assumptions or perceptions of 20th century. Grow up... if u're a True Sikh lover you'll want your fellow community people to get respect by just their presence or glance of the GLOW on their faces(SAABAT SURATS)... And once they open their mouth, u'll want world to fall in their feet to watch their Godliness and divinity.... And the one's challenging their radience, power or vitality.... U'll want them DEAD... This is LOVE for SIKHI... And not that what u're saying... Egomaniacs who think they're the saviours of the world like any SUCKER Dera chiefs....

Lassi

nimanna's picture
With respect Lassi its look like you are a big dreamer there is lot more out there like you but this guy never wear the truban in his life and i bet his father also never wear the truban so how we accept from him now.so dont even think he is going to wear truban tomarrow.any way i congrt him on his win atleast we can say he is PUNJABI.chak de PUNJABI.

Don't agree with the statement of his father

"My son has proved that 'Singh is King' in a real sense. He has brought laurels for the whole Sikh community and for the whole nation," said father AS Bindra. Only Sikhs who stand in the image of the Guru are recognized as Sikhs and their achievement is recognized as a Sikh achievement. Those who don't keep the form of a Sikh are only achieving individual accolades. Singh is king only when we obey the true king, sachay patshah, Siri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj. Singh is a divine king, not a worldly king. The realm of maya has no meaning for a real Singh, the Khalsa belongs to God and so to does victory. WaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa, WaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh!

To Lassi from Mukatbachittar

LOL...I am "westerner" myself. I have lived in India for the last 20 years studying Sanskrut and Hindi at the Benaras Hindu University. I am currently pursuing my PHD at the Dyal Singh College in Delhi University, Lodhi Road. I converted to Sikhi BUT got out of it very recently after realising that they are nothing but a bunch of gas cylinders (except for a few humble, genuine ones because of whom I still retain my given Sikh name.) Yes...the humble Sikhs are truly lovable...but some of them are nothing but a bunch of morons, who just shoot off at the mouth. Lassi...where you from?

Answer to Mukat

I am a white and i was born and raised up in Europe. Well this story about your religion and everything is only about you not about Sikhs and it doesnt change the fact that your first comment was full of lie and hatred which is not the best way to convince anyone. If you wanna have a valuable discussion about Sikhs then share your opinion and experiences with the readers and try to use a proper style for it.

Westeners or Easteners doesn't matter.... Suckers are the same

Harman's picture
I'm very happy that you got out of Sikhi in time otherwise our community couldn't have withstood a hypocrit like you..... You don't even need to keep a Sikh name if you find them morons or just a bunch of Gas cylinders..... Lassi!! I'm really sorry to interrupt but this moron has crossed his limits.

I am Abhinav Singh Khalsa. Son of Guru Gobind Singh Ji

Submitted by mukatbachittar on Tue, 08/12/2008 - 2:40am. Hello! Hello! Hello! Who says Abhinav is a SIKH? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Response I really could not care if Abhinav is called a Sikh or Not, He has brought Shame to the whole Sikh community by removing the last name SINGH and removing his Turban... his children will marry all demon hindus and destroy the purity of Sikhism. Its NOT to late for him to receive the full Blessings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji by wearing his Turban and declaring to the Brahmin controlled media that I am a Khalsa. If he was a brahmin the press would have kept this story alive for 4 years

Abhinav

er_simarpreet's picture
Congrats Abhinav But do come with turban to India.... Hope u will...

Congrats But come to India with Turban

er_simarpreet's picture
Congrats Abhinav.. But do come to India with Turban so that we also feel great of our community. let people show we are really the Kings... Excuse me Mukatbachittar. Tere te uda dene tittar.... Raj karega Khalsa... sadd naaa rees kar...

Mukatbachittar deserves CHHITAR

Harman's picture
Tittar uddan de naal naal ehde maar dena chhitar....

Congratulations to Abhinav!

I really hope Abhinav stopped shaving yesterday and will tie a Turban for the closing ceremony.

One Sikh achivement for mukatbachittar

I can tell you one mukat. We Western people respect Sikhs much more than your kind... :-) With their tolerance, hospitality and honesty they won the war against our hearts that you may never will. So please stop your primitive propaganda against Sikhs and don't mess with them because we are fed up with it. Instead try to behave as an intelligent person so the World may accept you.

OOOOOO......

Harman's picture
It's the news that says he's a sikh and he himself and his parents say that he's a sikh..... But I don't like such monna Sikhs.... Anyways!! Mukatbachittar, you're showing height of ignorance. Go and read some sikh history. God bless.

Congrats Abinav

Harman's picture
Many Congratulations to Abhinav for the gold medal.... Though Champs don't have a religion because " victory is their religion ". But this movie "Singh is King" has created a famous punchline as everyone is hungry for kingship and anybody achieving anything will say that "Singh is King" because this is what opportunism is all about..... The very nature of modern society.... So we have a new cliche which'll be inserted everywhere no matter it fits or not. Just like it's a misfit in the above case. I won't be surprised if Shahrukh Khan renames himself as Shahrukh Singh Khan..... LOL .... to maintain his title of KING KHAN. But I personally feel, the religion of a true sportsman is the sport he plays.... and it inevitably is.... And our tenth master has created Champs of WAR (of any kind) as Fateh(Victory) is in their blood. That's why they say: Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!!

WHO are we to judge other people

We should not judge other people faith. Bindra claims to be sikh. http://thelangarhall.com/archives/394

Congratulations

It is indeed a commendable task which Abhinav has acheived.May Waheguru bless him with many more!! At same time he is no where a Sikh hence we should not put a title as "SIKH wins gold at olympics".Such adulation to some one who does not respect the basics of Sikhi would send wrong message.I am sure he would shot the same score or even more even with wearing a turban but perhaps the unfaithfulness towards the community runs in there blood.

Just because he doesn't have

Just because he doesn't have a turban, doesn't mean he isn't a Sikh.

Congrats Abhinav

Congrats Abhinav Singh! Don't let the naysayers put you down, with the blessing of Waheguru you won Gold!

Abhinav Bindra: India's Goldfinger - But no "Singh is king"

i congratulate him for his success. Hope many more medals to come in future, however he is not a sikh. We sikhs doesn't need title - "Singh is king" from a person, who is not withstanding with his guru and forgot his glory. I wish Sikhnet does not promote this kind of sikhism. Mr. Bindra - you could have been proud of the community, but unfortunately, when parents themselves are no more in sikhi, how can they teach their sons/daughters. Mr. Bindra - Well Done, but get a medal in Sikhi, be the GEMS of sikhi.
